Immigration Health Surcharge

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is a contribution to the National Health Service (NHS) of £1,035 per person per year that individuals applying for a first UK visa of more than six months or renewing their UK visa are required to pay.

New employees who qualify for international relocation may include the IHS in their application for relocation costs. Existing employees or new employees who do not qualify for international relocation may apply for (taxable) reimbursement under the ISS.

Exceptionally, if you are not able to access either of the above routes, you may be able to apply for an IHS Loan:

Immigration Health Surcharge loan scheme

  • HR-PR9 form and applicant guide - application for a loan to cover the Immigration Health Surcharge - please note - the maximum loan that can currently be applied for is £5,000
Please note, if the applicant has not already commenced employment with us, their employing department will need to contact Expenses to request additional approval paperwork and to underwrite the loan.

Please note that in April 2025, the Home Office made a change to its immigration rules for sponsors of Skilled Workers which may affect some Skilled Worker visa holders who wish to apply for a loan scheme to help with these immigration costs. If you are a Skilled Worker visa holder whose CoS was assigned after 9 April 2025 and you are considering requesting a loan, please contact People Immigration Team so we can see how the rule change may affect a I H S loan application. This change does not affect anyone who is not a Skilled Worker visa holder.
